Pilates works by re-educating the body in how to move efficiently and correctly. Its focus is on strengthening the deep stability muscles that hold things in place as you move. It incorporates breathing, relaxation, and slow controlled movements whilst maintaining correct body alignment.
Pilates is suitable for everyone of all ages, especially those with back problems or recurrent sports injuries. It is effective in the prevention and treatment of many problems, and can also enhance sports performance.
There are many Pilates classes available, but some classes may be too advanced, especially after recent injury or if you have a recurring problem and so it is advisable to seek advice from a physiotherapist. A modified form of Pilates has been developed by physiotherapists specifically to rehabilitate individuals after injury.
